City Rail Link tunnel machine named after Valerie Adams

So proud of our students Jasmine and Kauri in Room 9 and Estherbella in Room 5 for winning the Harker Tunnel naming competition. 

An Auckland City Rail Link digging machine has been named after Olympic gold medalist Valerie Adams - unbeknownst to her.

Florence and the Machine, Little Red Riding Hood, Greek goddess Athena and Kowhai were all put forward by students at Sir Edmund Hillary School in Papakura for two boring machines that will dig under Auckland's CBD.

But it was Valerie and Maia that were chosen to name the machines that Connectus, a McConnell Dowell and Hawkins joint venture, will use to dig the City Rail Link (CRL) Albert St stormwater tunnels.

Adams says she was quite surprised when she found out she was the namesake for the machine. 

"It's quite an interesting object to have named after me, but I guess it's appropriate because it's strong and so am I," Adams said.

She said she would have preferred being named after a Ferrari but did see the funny side. 

"It's kind of hilarious, I just hope one day I can ride on this machine."

Maia is the name for the smaller machine and was submitted by eight-year-old Estherbella Haenga.

"It means brave in Maori and working in the tunnel is a brave thing to do," she says.

CRL will use two 3.4 kilometre long tunnels up to 42 metres below the city streets to create a rail line linking Britomart and the city centre with the existing western line near Mt Eden.

Principal Kataraina Nock says it was a "wonderful" opportunity to participate in the competition.

"To think they can all take a ride on the CRL in years to come and know they've been part of its creation makes this meaningful and special."

The two machines will replace the existing stormwater main and re-divert the Orakei sewer main under Albert St.

One of the world's largest piling rigs is now on site building the 362 piles needed for construction of the first tunnel.

The piles are 20 metres deep and each is filled with two trucks of concrete and reinforcing cages. These will line the Albert St tunnels and work is expected to be finished in April 2017.

The stormwater diversion is needed before construction of the CRL's cut and cover tunnels along Albert St can begin.

Valerie and Maia will be launched from 18 metre deep shafts on the corner of Victoria and Albert Streets.

Valerie will be in charge of constructing the new stormwater main and Maia will divert a sewer main to be complete in August 2017.

The CRL is set to cost between $2.5 billion and $3.4b and is expected to be completed by 2022.

KPMG Charity Golf day

Cannot thank Justine and her team at KPMG enough.  We raised a whooping $3,095 for our tamariki at the KPMG Charity Golf event hosted at the Royal Auckland Golf club.  The money fundraised will be used to install fixed outdoor seating.

Term 4 Zoo trip

What a feat! Our entire school went to Auckland Zoo and had a fabulous time exploring and looking at the exotic animals. What a great experience for our kids.

Harker Tunnel Challenge

Congratulations to Estherbella , Kauri and Jasmine in Room five and nine for winning the Harker Tunnel name competition!

The Winners and supporting adults (parent/guardian/teacher) will be invited to watch the machine being lowered into the ground on site in the CBD.  This is a big honor for our school as the tunnel will be a part of the new underground metro in Auckland City.

Room five's bake sale

Our class has been learning about quality packaging and advertising so we decided to have a bake sale. We had a wonderful day sharing our baking with one another. Thank you to all the whanau that helped to make the day such a success. The food was delicious.

We are learning to write a descriptive poem. We started the term writing some descriptive poems to get us thinking about our senses and how we can use this in our writing.

Chromebook Launch

Kia ora everyone, We had a lovely day on Wednesday the 23rd of March celebrating the launch of our chromebooks in Room 5.

Swimming sports

 Swimming sports was a great success.  Well done to the winning house group which was Kereru!  We have some talented swimmers and all the staff, parents and children thoroughly enjoyed the day.

We are learning to summarise a story.

Swimming lessons

Our swimming lessons started on Monday and it was lots of fun!  Swimming lessons this week will run on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday (not Wednesday because of our school trip).  Here are some photos of the day.  Please don't forget to bring your togs and towel on these days.

First day back at school for 2016

Hope you had a wonderful holiday.  Just an update about when we start back at school.  Our first day is Wednesday the 3rd of February 2016.  Look forward to seeing you all then and hearing about your holidays.  Have a look at the information slides on our class site to have a look at some of the things that will be a focus this term.  You can also have a look at what group you are in for Reading, Writing and Maths.  We will change the learning goals and planning when you have settled into school.
